    Hat party meta

Let’s have a hat party.

If you want a hat on your account for something like a project or company association, post here. If it seems legitimate, I’ll private message you and we’ll figure out a way to actually verify your association privately (like receiving an e-mail at a company domain).

These should be things you would need to actually use in the course of posting comments, not just something like maintaining an obscure piece of software that no one will ever discuss or question whether you are actually associated with that project.

It should also be said that just wearing a hat while commenting does not mean you are speaking for that company/project (the usual disclaimer in the comment should suffice), just that it clears up any doubt as to whether you are actually associated with that company/project.

Update 2016-04-06: There is now a formal hat request system that you should use instead of posting here.

  2. 4

@steveklabnik has been given a rust hat

    1. 2

      testing, testing

    2. 3

Is there a limit to the number of hats? Can I have one for FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD and DragonFly BSD?

And maybe Mozilla, too, although I haven’t been much involved in ages — just asking in case there’s a deficit of hats in the future due to some hat speculation, or that they are awarded on FIFO basis.

Also, do you have any Russian or Soviet hats? Pretty chilly right now.

      1. 2

No limit, but you can only wear one on each comment post.

If you want all of those added, just message me your e-mail addresses for each one that I can send an e-mail to to confirm and I’ll get them added.

        1. 2

Granted NetBSD, FreeBSD, and DragonFly BSD developer hats to @cnst

          1. 1

            Cool, thanks!

              testing

        2. 3

I work on Open Dylan and emscripten, although I am close to being resigned to Open Dylan being an obscure project no one cares about.

          1. 1

@BruceM joins the party with Emscripten and Open Dylan hats

          2. 2

can I have “HERE Maps” or something to that effect?

            1. 2

How’s the work in that part of Nokia?

              1. 3

I work in the Chicago office. I truly believe we are working on some of the most important tech for making a better world. We are mapping the entire world with cars with freakin lasers on their heads. We are building the most detailed maps that ever existed for use with autonomous vehicles. We have real hard problems here. Actual big data problems. And you can have an impact here. I have known people who started small projects that now have multi-million dollar budgets.

And all of the work goes towards a great need for humanity.

But this of course is my opinion. Oh boy, you asked a bad question. Now you got me going. As you can tell, I am passionate about it.

The bad? Yes there is bad. Just as any company has their problems. Hierarchy, managers, etc.

              2. 2

@mempko gets a HERE Maps Developer hat

                1. 3

              3. 2

                @algernon is a debian developer

                1. 2

It would be fun if hats could be of different colour – for example, FreeBSD is traditionally dark red, OpenBSD is generally teal or blue, NetBSD is orange and DragonFly is maybe green.

                  1. 1

Can I get a Debian hat?

how about a ‘nixer’ hat, for our unix community nixers.net ?

Could I get a “HardenedBSD Cofounder” hat, please?

                              2. 1

Could I get GNU maintainer, GNU Octave, and Mercurial contributor hats?

                                1. 1

Please submit them through the new hat request system.

Does it have to be a specific project/org? I do a lot of community organization in multiple spaces (Ruby, Elasticsearch, general tech Meetups, Rust… both organizing conferences as well as moderation of several spaces, like bugtrackers). I’m not attached to any long-term project, though (my most prominent maybe being lead of a nonprofit, Ruby Berlin e.V.).

I like the idea of a hat, because I often run into the problem of explaining again and again that I am actually one of those people running shows and not discussing from some position of wishful thinking, I actually implement most things I speak about. Also, I attend conferences and use software like anyone else, so speaking with my organizer/moderation hat on and off is a thing.

                                  1. 2

Well I suppose it is just whatever you have the authority to speak about, and that I can verify.

                                    1. 1

Sure, feel free to get in touch. “community management” or something similar would be of my interest and I can show references.

                                      Thanks :).

                                  2. 1

Are there plans to add a hat comment in the emails? That would be nice to have.

                                    1. 3

                                      Sure, I’ll get on that.

                                    2. 1

This would be cooler with Valve employees…

                                      1. 1

                                        I wouldn’t mind an  hat.

                                        1. 2

Why you’d want a hat that’s in the private use space? That’s an empty rectangle.

                                          1. 1

I only want hats that other people can’t see. It’s a Groucho move.

                                          2. 1

Granted an apple developer hat to @jfb.

                                            1. 1

                                              Lookit that!

                                          3. 1

Could I get an Exim hat please? :)

                                            1. 1

@philpennock gets an Exim Developer hat.

                                            2. 1

@jcs I think it would be cool to have a “Devio.us Admin” hat for myself, @bcallah, and @kyle.

Also, @bcallah totally needs an OpenBSD Developer hat (even if he won’t ask for it himself)

                                              1. 1

                                                I can has too?

                                                1. 1

(To clarify, jasper@ is an OpenBSD dev, not a “Devio.us Admin” in case that wasn’t clear.)

                                                  1. 1

                                                    You has.

                                                  2. 1

Oh I totally forgot @lteo is also an OpenBSD Developer.

                                                    1. 1

                                                      And @qbit

                                                      1. 1

                                                        i haz

                                                        1. 1

Huh I totally didn’t see that before. (And I didn’t see you request one.) Oops.

                                                  3. 1

Could I get a GitHub Developer hat?

                                                    1. 1

Please use the new hats request system.

                                                      1. 1

                                                        Thanks!
