I’ve been a big fan of https://www.webfaction.com/ since I started using them many years ago. Unfortunately they were bought by GoDaddy in 2016 and now they are migrating all of the accounts to tsoHost starting in November. Shortly after receiving the email about the migration to tsoHost I got another email from them saying my account could not be migrated to tsoHost because of some features I was using:

  • websockets on a custom port
  • web application on a custom port

I’m not surprised by this. I’ve a lot of different things running on WebFaction.

I still like the convenience of having someone else handle the maintenance of web, database, and email servers. Can you all recommend a good shared hosting service that offers SSH access, allows me to build and run my own programs, and has managed web, database, and email servers?

Also, I just saw https://lobste.rs/s/ljikpd/youtube_dl_repository_taken_down_from, bonus points if you can recommend a hosting company in a location that would make censorship harder.

I haven’t used it myself, but https://www.opalstack.com/ was founded by one former employee of WebFaction (source: https://www.opalstack.com/2019/03/13/its-time-to-switch-to-an-independently-owned-hosting-company/ ) and from a cursory look at their pages they should match your requirements.

Wow! Thanks for sharing. I had not heard about OpalStack, I think I am going to give it a try.

not sure if this is exactly what you’re after, but many old school shell account providers meet your requirements: sdf.org, panix.com, theworld.com, etc.

I’ve been a Pair.com customer since 2001 and would recommend them for basic web, email, and server hosting.
