I was confused why they would take on the extra work of supporting Mercurial and git. Especially since Mercurial seems pretty niche in 2025, but this bit at the end explains it somewhat:
Mercurial infrastructure is already there and working and has been for years. Main hurdles are performance and just flipping the switch.

My biggest issue is the fact that neither git nor Mercurial are in base. We need at least a minimalistic client that’s capable of fetching/updating in the base OS.
