Much more eloquently put than I have talked about it in the past, and I agree 100%.

Part of it is just being able to walk away and only work on those parts I am interested in, so the exact opposite of work, for most people.

On the other hand I’ve never been paid for open source work full-time, so maybe I would like it. Then again I’d kinda feel bad taking my normal salary figure from people’s donations, so that would also take the fun out of it, I guess more if it was direct than with a middleman of a company being funded and them paying me a normal salary.

All of this is true but the main obstacle is that it’s hard to get people to pay you for something you give away.
