LaTeX is a wonderful piece of software, but it’s often quite temperamental and the error messages are very cryptic (to me at least).

Isn’t this something that LuaLaTeX was meant to help with? Being able to write in a more concise way than TeX, i.e., Lua, sounds as if it would make such tasks simpler.
