    Habitat (later Club Caribe) was a very early graphical MMO for the Commodore 64 played using the Quantum Link online service.

    The linked repository contains the assembly language code for the Commodore 64 client, the PL/I code (running on Stratus VOS) for the server, and various assets.

    This is a beautiful comment:

          Since PL/1 lacks McCarthy evaluation of conditional expressions, these
          conditions result in a huge number of nested if statements.
          Consequently, we are using (*shudder*) goto's here to make the code

      I’d love to poke around with VOS considering the good things I’ve heard about it, but it’s unobtanium to try to get your hands on…

      Not only is Habitat awesome, and an awesome piece of history, but you can go to neohabitat.org and actually play the game in your browser! They reimplemented the backend and it runs in a commodore 64 emulator in browser mode (but you can even play it on a real actual c64!)

        If you look in the directory habitat/chip/habitat/docs/ in this repo, there are dozens of incredibly detailed articles on the structure of the world, including the economy, geography, planned capacity, code of ethics, etc. There are internal emails that sometimes appear to be quite frosty. There are even references to Steve Case, who then was merely a Quantum employee! Most projects of this age have a tiny fraction of this amount of history attached.

        Also the developers have run a blog called Habitat Chronicles since the 2000s that has been linked here several times. They were involved in all sorts of other bits of computer history as well.
