There is now an option to show small user avatars next to their username on story lists and comments. Not terribly helpful but is nice for scanning a page of things looking for @pushcx’s green icon.

There is also a new option to show a few line excerpt of the story cached text or summary text in the main story lists. This was requested a few times. Helpful on the mobile view to avoid a click, I suppose. Feedback welcome on whether it should be bigger, smaller, faded, etc.

Highlighting text in a comment before clicking reply will quote it. Comment textareas also auto-grow as you type and will preserve the height when switching to a preview.

Submitters can now select a “I am the author of this story” option when submitting to make it clear they are the author of the text, for follow up questions or flames.

And finally, comment trees can be collapsed to ignore a conversation going off topic or whatever.

Nice! May I suggest, though, putting the user avatars to the left of the username rather than the right? That way they will tend to align vertically (typically the text to the left of username is fixed, e.g. “by”, or the comment-thread collapse widget) which makes for easier scanning and less distraction from the irregular placement.

I would tend to agree! Here’s a shoddily put together example with incorrect spacing but you get the idea.

      1. 10

Ok, I moved them to the left.

Excellent additions! I love the user avatar option, I have a far easier time remembering users by picture than I do via username.

        This is pretty cool.

These are probably my two favourite features, they seem like they’re going to be rather useful.

I’ll have to use this for a bit to get a feel for it, but it’s definitely welcome. Admittedly, I mostly interact via email, but it’s still nice when browsing the site.

These are great! I’m particularly happy about the “I am the author” flag, since it’ll save me realizing that belatedly all the time. But they’re all big deals. :)

I would personally maybe halve how much text is shown in the previews, but I may be biased by wanting something approximately the length of a tweet, because I’m trained to find that easily skimmable. :)

          1. 4

FWIW I find the preview text too long as well. But as you say, that may be because I’ve been conditioned by Twitter to prefer 140 character summaries.

            1. 4

I shrunk them to two lines, is that still too long?

              1. 2

Two lines feels about right. Thanks!

Can they be indented a little? They tend to flow into the next line with all the good metadata. Or put the summary last.

A suggestion: Collapse the root comment, not just the replies. Ideally into a short one-line preview. Collapsing is great for keeping track of what you’ve read vs haven’t, especially for very large discussions. Bonus points for client-side persistence.

                1. 3

Ok it collapses the root comment as well.

I had no idea I had a green icon. Ghostery blocks Gravatar a spart of preventing third-party sites from tracking me across the web, I never noticed it was in use here.

I have created yet another fucking Gravatar account to upload them my usual icon yet again. It doesn’t seem to be working, which either means the Gravar is cached someplace or broken as usual, but that’s my quota of putting up with Gravatar for the year.

Your brown squiggle looks fine here.

Heh, based on which picture I had set, I must have last messed with Gravatar in March 2014. Anyway, it motivated me to go fix it, and on GitHub too, so I’m happy to have had the reminder to.

Comment tree addition is great. Also appreciate the avatars. Thanks!

I use hacker new in chrome, which provides this ability, among others.

And big props for making all of this optional.

Wooo! Comment collapsing is awesome! I personally dislike the [+] [-] style for collapse/expand which is why for my userscript I added it to the end like this.

I think it feels more lobstery and looks cleaner. What do you think?

                                1. 3

I think it does look cleaner but makes it harder to scan down the page to quickly collapse multiple threads.

I don’t remember there being a “flame” reason in the downvotes options…

Idk why I’m getting downvoted ? @journeysquid has a hat. I was asking how he got it. @jcs

I didn’t vote on your comment either way, but I would guess it’s because if you hit the “search” link at the top and type “hat” or “hats” it’s in the first five results.
