You can set it to send you both email and Pushover alerts on replies and mentions in preferences.
The issue there is that it’s not enabled by default, and most people wouldn’t want it enabled by default.
A tiny red mailbox icon, however, is a convenient and unobtrusive way to prevent lost communication without cluttering up our already over cluttered email.
Last time I asked, yes, there was interest.
