The disappearance of Solaris 12 from the roadmap doesn’t necessarily mean anything (after all, Microsoft is releasing significant updates to Windows 10 at quite a pace), but things are not looking good. I guess it’s been a long time coming, as Oracle hardware sales have been on the decline for some time now. I’m still horrified that Sun didn’t do all they could to be bought by IBM…

What a horrible end for a hardware platform and operating system that I’ll always have a soft spot for. As others have said, at least we have the (thriving) phoenix of illumos that has risen from the ashes of OpenSolaris.

Sad to see Solaris go. I still have the OpenSolaris CD’s from when Sun was sending them out for free.

Frankly, I’m surprised Solaris has lasted this long. I thought Oracle would have killed it by now.

Oracle doesn’t kill technologies. It turns them into zombies and then charges you millions of dollars to send out consultants to manage those zombies.

This is a good thing. If you really need it they’ll help you keep it running. It’s like the anti-google.

Heh. The zombie analogy is not that far off - they provide almost indefinite support for some hardware and software (as long as you’re willing to pay, of course!). I’m not sure if that’s something that came from Sun?

From the Oracle Lifetime Support Policy: Oracle and Sun System Software

For selected products, Oracle may offer Sustaining Support for an indefinite period.

Note that, eg, Solaris 8 (released February 2000) will be supported “indefinitely” if you have a sustaining support contract.

Finally bites the dust. The Solaris 10, OpenSolaris, and Joyent stuff were at least a decent ending for a proprietary UNIX. Also showed it could’ve pivoted into a Red Hat model for the OS with a stability focus as differentiator. Integrate with Oracle software for licensing cross-selling. I don’t think it had to end but it was at least impressive in some ways before it did.

well, at least Oracle donated to OpenBSD. Solaris 12 is a success by my meagre standards :)
