Maybe a tweak to the description could help? The “design” tag was similarly catchall for a while but is quite clear now. Do you have a longer text about it we could try to boil down? Maybe make a list of archetypal stories and folks could try to distill their commonalities?
I could see the “culture” tag being a useful tar-pit. Stuff coming from HN that has no purpose other than espousing SF culture may end up falling in there, where it can be ignored or culled.
I think that just not having a bucket to shove your story into is a pretty good way to prevent folks from posting things that are inappropriate. That’s one of the intended uses of tags, to describe what is or is not suited to lobsters.
