One of the Servfail admins here, feel free to ask any questions!

        (oh hello fellow admin!)

For the unaware: SERVFAIL is our (sdomi, famfo, Merlin, TheresNoTime) authoritative nameserver project: we host nameservers and provide a web interface for managing zones (adding/modifying/deleting records, etc). Users can then delegate their domains to our NSes. Our goal is to make DNS seem a bit less scary, and provide viable alternatives to commercial servers.

I’m a bit unsure about this idea.

On the one hand I like it, because DNS is not some sort of dark magic only the magic at $BIGCOMPANY can host. Like many other services it’s quite easy to host yourself, when you have spend some time learning about it.

On the other hand I have seen a bunch of self-hosted services which work some time and then failed for some reason. When I get asked for help I find mostly some over complicated setup. Some are setup with a magic tool the admin don’t understand. Some are setup with a random howto and forgotten changes. In the end the guys which set up this stuff can’t answer basic questions about the setup (something like: show me the config for the dovecot).

Back to topic: I hope SERVFAIL helps a lot of people to learn about DNS.

I love that the site has a font-picker. That’s a cool little idea that makes a world of difference

But if the default is IBM VGA8, why do you need a font picker to move away from perfection?
