    Decoupling remains the only insurance for content providers that their content can flow on each of these new browsers and their incumbents.

    I think for the next 5-10 years many companies will provide content on a website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, Google+, Flickr. It is scary just how soon/many companies seem to be going “Facebook only” or at least spending 90% of their effort there rather than websites or submitting press releases to other websites.

    To me, this means that Facebook is now the new browser

    You could argue that Facebook is the new AOL internet CD and walled garden. I’m disappointed that many companies seem to be shunning privately owned blogs/websites/RSS in favour of a walled garden. Sure customers have to visit blogs/websites individually but RSS fixes that, if everyone would get on board (Facebook!). Eventually Facebook will be superseded by some new competitor and everyone will migrate there, is this the future of the internet? Everyone just shifting from a single monopoly every 5 years? I’m pretty sure Facebook doesn’t make it easy/possible to get your data for reasons of vendor lock in, so good luck with that everyone. On the one hand that is rubbish as you need to source data from 10 different sources to follow someone for 50 years, but on the other hand theoretically every 5 years everyone’s data is on the “best possible platform”, so at least we aren’t still using AOL or geocities sites any more.

    One of the linked articles is interesting. I have a smart TV but wouldn’t ever use it to browse the web. So why do I double take when AppleTV doesn’t have a browser?
