This is a great story. I especially liked that the factory employees were complicit, deliberately sabotaging boards with a short so they could sell them as scrap on the side.

To think so many in the Western world took computers for granted in the same era and wouldn’t bother with them.

Fascinating story and great photography! The book Hacking Europe discusses some similar challenges facing hobbyists elsewhere in Europe at the time. The chapters by Patryk Wasiak about Poland, Bruno Jakić about Yugoslavia, and Theodoros Lekkas about Greece really stand out in my memory. I can imagine lots of lobsters would enjoy the book but it’s tricky to recommend because it’s prohibitively expensive without access to a university library.
