    I would love to know the books he grabbed the terrible C examples from, notably the combine function. If anyone knows, please leave a comment.

      Given the description in the lead-in to combine, I would almost bet it’s from Herbert Schildt’s legendarily-bad “C: The Complete Reference” (see https://www.seebs.net/c/c_tcn4e.html).
