What are you doing this week? Feel free to share!

Keep in mind it’s OK to do nothing at all, too.

I’m trying to email more creators whose content that I adore. I consume a lot of blogs and video content but don’t reach out that often.

For me, an email from someone who reads my blog means so much more than an integer going up by 1 in an analytics panel. An encouraging message gives me the stamina to write five more posts!

    1. 5

I don’t have analytics at all on my personal site, wiki, blog. It’s pointless waste of time to look at those numbers going up/down imo. What matters are the interactions you get from the content you produce or sales made. But never viewership analytics I found.

It’s also addicting attaching any kind of metrics to anything so whatever metrics you do add, should be actionable. But with viewership metrics, the kind of signals you get are rarely ever useful.

Actually ignore all the above, read through your post on building privacy focused analytics and it’s great. I forgot about the Where users are referred from part which is indeed super useful. I decided to reply to you as analytics is something I always struggled with in the past as I found it to waste me more time ‘checking’ them than actually deriving value from them.

with viewership metrics, the kind of signals you get are rarely ever useful

I agree with this. Getting people to click an article does not mean that the clickers found it to be helpful content.

Time spent on a page can help see which pages people linger on but again it doesn’t confirm that the time spent resulted in value gained for the reader.

What matters are the interactions you get from the content you produce or sales made

        Yes!

        Where users are referred from

As you say, I have found this helpful because I can reply to/contribute to communities who enjoyed a post.

I found it to waste me more time ‘checking’ them than actually deriving value from them

I’ve had to work on this too!

      2. 1

I totally agree. I’ve long since turned off analytics on my site, and as far as I know, nobody reads the content that I post. This impression is occasionally broken by somebody emailing me, and it’s great!

I just wish there was more feedback on what people write. Sometimes I wonder if my content has obvious flaws that I’m blind to. Nobody has ever e-mailed me a correction, but I know better than to assume that means there is nothing wrong.

      3. 5

I started working on a simple static site/blog generator for myself. I’m hoping to have it ready to start publishing content by the end of the week! In addition to that I’m making sure I take some time for non-developer and non-computer hobbies, like practicing my guitar. I think I might try to learn a new song starting this week.

        1. 4

Playing Fallout 2 to get into the mood of post apocalyptic world to figure out if I should buy Wastelands 3. Apart from that working on my Memcached server port to Rust. I have binary protocol working, sets/gets are working, need to add more features int he future. At the moment I’m concentrating on correctness not on performance and adding more unit tests.

          1. 3

I’ve been reading Mozilla’s financial filings to understand what’s going on there. I have a post written about it but still in an early state. Hopefully can get it near finished this weekend.

Otherwise another week of being a full time Dad :)

            1. 3

              For work, normal work stuff.

For content creation, I’m doing an experiment with a couple of topics I want to cover by video this week. I’d like to try to do the simplest introduction possible to DDD, explaining both the good and bad parts of it. I’d also like to take a first stab at explaining Kangaroo Programming.

Usually I write an essay on something, edit a few times, post around, then do a podcast or video. Here I know what I want to say, just not how to say it well, so I’m going to try jumping in and see if I can explain on the fly. Honestly I think the result will be worse but I’m not sure. Even if it’s worse it may be that it works like rubber duck debugging: simply walking thru the topic explains to yourself where the work needs to happen. I need the video practice, and I need practice explaining on my feet, so I win either way.

              1. 1

                What’s DDD?

                1. 1

                  Domain-Driven Design

              2. 3

                Work

                • Working on Jira Data Center Cluster implementation. Plan is complete this activity and make it available on production by this month end.

                Personal

                • Last weekend was pretty satisfying for me. Able to get done many of the pending activities. One exciting thing to share is I ran a half marathon here irrespective of bad air quality due to wild fires. Well, I ran within home, indoors in our Living Room! So my plan is write a blog on this experience in detail. Hoping getting that done!
                1. 2

Updating syncopoli for Android O. Android has become a compatibility nightmare between versions and a tough-to-follow moving target. It’s especially frustrating when things that just work start breaking for no good reason. Also started reading through Autotools: Practitioner’s Guide.

New rip hand saw is arriving today, so I’m excited to get back to cutting some wood in the next few days and finish up the workbench.

                  1. 2

@work Finishing up some code reviews, and possibly starting release testing. I have next week off, so hopefully I’ll miss most of the manual testing. That’s not why I took the week off, but it’s definitely a pleasant coincidence.

@home Refactoring how I bind and fill buffers in my OpenGL wrapper library based on some difficulties I had generating textures with Blend2D.

Also trying to play the piano more

                    1. 2

I broke my (dominant) arm and now everything hurts.. going to try to not complain too much.

                      1. 2

Taking tomorrow’s bank holiday into consideration, this week should be calm, praying for the on-call gods to not wake me up with snafus.

                        • investigating issues our funky GC issues that oversaturate production nodes at random.
                        • Working on moving to Colemak layout.
                        • Getting used to Kinesis Advantage2 keyboard.
                        • Implemeting Zettelkasten in Vim.
                        1. 2

                          Work:
Catching up after a week of vacation. The scope for one of my tickets has expanded dramatically.

                          Personal:
Hacking on a SETL interpreter. The next step will be to convert it from setjmp/longjmp to C++ exceptions. After that, I will look into replacing the memory allocator with mimalloc.

                          1. 2

During the day, some pretty boring work looking at planner (fast downward) run traces, trying to see whether the instrumentation I have put together can actually show the things I want it to show.

During the night, I’ll be working on my emulator writing project. Currently writing code to generate a decoder from bits to instruction enum values automatically from an instruction description. Dealing with extracting non-power-of-2 signed fields from unaligned positions in a stream of bits is revealing problems with my naive solution.

                            1. 2

                              Normal work stuff.

After hours, doing some work to prepare our newly purchased flat for an overall painting/wallpapering.

                              1. 2

I’m working on automating the build of ${DAYJOB}‘s next generation “SecurityOoperations Center (SOC) in-a-box” appliance firmware using Jenkins. I’m leading the entire company in an entirely new direction. Hopefully, we’ll be able to take the infosec world by storm within the next six to twelve months.

                                1. 2

                                  For work, more docs.

For home, catching up on chores, and working on my wife’s e-commerce site, and maybe a tiny bit of work on porting PISC from Go to Nim, or a small bit of work on Seclusa.

                                  1. 2

I’m playing with NVidia’s PTX ISA. I was hoping there’d be some utilities like xbyak/asmjit for it, but I’m not aware of any. I’m just using PyCuda for now but will need a C++ solution eventually

                                    1. 2

At work, adding some React components and rewriting a b2b wholesale app that’s a fork of Saleor/Django (an older build) into a more functional API.

Personally, building a video synth and doing a cover of some early 80’s Belgian electro dressed like a werewolf leather daddy. Gotta keep things ridiculous (although I’m not sure if refactoring Django is more or less ridiculous in it’s current state).

                                      1. 2

Playing Fallout 2 to get into the mood of post apocalyptic world to figure out if I should buy Wastelands 3. Hoping to die.

                                          1. 5

Hoping everything is working fine on your end. If not, please talk with your friend, families. Agreed weather, climate, current world is not really helping to make us feel better, but don’t let it grow on you. We gotta fight for better days.

                                            Please do take care!

                                            1. 1

                                              Thanks.

                                            2. 2

Please take care of yourself. Sit on a beach, realize that politics is mostly sports but with legal systems, and the world is not in a very bad place. Life will go on, there are always more things to do and more opportunities to do them.

                                              1. 1

                                                Thank you.
