I clicked author as I am the host of the podcast - I am not Cory Doctorow. He is way smarter than me. It was fun to talk to him about the dangers of a technological oligarchy and where things like machine learning can wrong.
I met him at a conference once and didn’t think he looks at all like Tom Hanks up close.
The interesting takeaway I got was not from what he talked about, it was about the nature of professional speakers. He was still “on the clock” after his presentation. The time he stood in the hallway was not punctuated with all those gestures that people generally make while standing in hallways–half turns, half raising limbs toward doorways, all those little “I’m going somewhere” movements. No, he was deliberately standing in a hallway because he knew that people were hoping to speak to him. He was still “on the clock”. Others, including me, left before he did. I can only imagine that the shy folks hovering nearby eventually spoke directly to him. This is something I’ll try to remember if I am called upon to make some kind of presentation.

Great story and great lesson to take away. Treat the time after your talk as part of the talk.
