I used to be an avid user of Pidgin. I really miss the times when the Big Internet have been using open protocols and it was possible to federate with them. Hell, I miss the time when it was feasible to reverse engineer their protocols and make alternative clients.
It’s terrifying that by now, “historical” is a right tag to put on a post about Pidgin even if that post was written yesterday.
We do have at least basic chat support for many of the modern protocols.. https://pidgin.im/plugins/?publisher=all&query=&type=Protocol
That list looks promising. I need to give it another try, thanks for pointing it out!
Is SourceForge still a thing? I’m asking this honestly, because I remember a couple of years ago most projects there were abandonware with defunct/spammed lists. On top of that, the download page looked really like one of these sleazy download pages crammed with ads, which claim that the file you’re looking for is behind their button.
Yes they’re still definitely a thing. They’ve been under new management since 2016 https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/06/under-new-management-sourceforge-moves-to-put-badness-in-past/
