This seems really sensible; it feels like a better fit for them than Gitlab.
Agreed. I wasn’t even aware GitLab owned Gitter, and now that I do I’m surprised we didn’t see any significant integration between the two platforms.
As someone who uses Gitter for a few open-source projects, and Matrix for personal communication with a friend, I’m actually incredibly excited at the possibilities here, and think it could easily become the default chat platform for tech communities. That being said, I think platforms like Discord have some incredible tooling integrations that, while possible on Matrix, might be more difficult to get up and running with. I’m sure with the infusion of developers using Gitter for their projects that we’ll see some more work in this area, and I’m super stoked to see how things turn out.
