    I thought about this a lot when I was working on a relatively simple 2d RPG - this is a great and detailed write-up of different techniques used through gaming history. I wish I would have had this as a reference years ago. It’s just one of those little details that is HUGELY important, and if done well people don’t really even notice (because it doesn’t get in the way)

      Yes - I finally had time to read it. This is a really, really good survey article of a subtle and important game design topic.
