How about adding a cryptography tag? A lot of the stuff I post and want to read about involves cryptography - there is also a cryptocurrency tag which is more narrow and specific.
You can have a fairly mathematical discussion about hashing algorithms without broaching any security related issues.
I guess you could draw parallels between programming and functional programming. I mean, FP is programming, right? So the question is if the cryptography niche (i.e. non information security related topics) is sufficiently active to warrant its own tag.
The standard question for tag suggestions is whether there are articles in the past that would fit the new tag and don’t comfortably fit an existing tag. Do you have some examples?
That’s my question. Here’s a few examples where I think the security tag was used, but a crypto tag would have been better. They fit within the bounds of a large security tag, but they aren’t in the middle, so to speak.
Thanks for the examples! It looks like there have been 2,239 posts tagged “security.” Looking at some of those posts that cover cryptography, I’ve yet to see one where security wouldn’t apply. I suppose that’s because security is a broader topic than cryptography. I know in the past we’ve tried to keep tags fairly orthogonal to each other. Do we anticipate there being a number of people who want to filter out security but would still like to read about cryptography?
I think that’s true. Cryptography has a similar relationship with security as reverse engineering, they are not always directly related but often inter-mix. Additionally it’s a broad topic that gathers a lot of links. Take a look at this search result on lobsters it’s quite apparent that they are not always just security related.
I could see the use for such a tag, but as others have noted it would have to be rather specific and cover the mathematical side of cryptography, not its application (already covered by security).
I think crypto would be better than cryptography. If this tag is needed, it should be done by renaming cryptocurrencies and setting the description to something like “Crypography and cryptocurrencies”.
I respectfully disagree…the main topics of discussion that are interesting about cryptocurrencies are more law and finance than they are math or security.
Added.
math+security== cryptography, as a field in of itselfcrypto as applied to software is likely just
securityI was going to suggest the same a while back. Does it completely overlap security or is it separate?

That’s why the description includes “cryptocurrencies” as a topic, like
scaling, security, etc.Yup. Gotta respectfully disagree with this. Cryptocurrency and cryptography are !=.
