I’ve been wanting to build a keyboard for years, since I first saw the ErgoDox. After that I stumbled across @technomancy’s Atreus and found r/mk - turns out a lot of people do this!

Anyway, ordered parts months ago, they finally all arrived :) Here’s my build log!

I always wondering about having this keyboards, are awesome, super cute, but at that level of tuning, if you touch a regular keyboard for sure type slow as fuck right? Because of distribution of keys?

    1. 2

If you went and used only a 40% for two years, you would be slow at a regular keyboard, but it’s very unusual that anyone does that. Most people can’t avoid occasionally using conventional keyboards now and then, and that’s typically enough to keep your speed up.

      1. 2

I use a Kinesis Advantage. After I first switched to it, it was a bit awkward going back to my MacBook keyboard, but now I can easily switch between the two.

      2. 2

What’s the “BL” keycap for? Backlight? Some other abbreviation?

        1. 3

You’re right, it’s for the backlight. It basically toggles the lights between four levels, off, and brightness increments.

        2. 2

Are those ortho-linear keyboard ergonomic? I always wondered…

          1. 6

I don’t believe any science indicates one way or another.

            1. 1

Sounds a bit like alternative layouts really, I suppose it’s just up to personal preference.

            2. 3

IMO it’s more comfortable to column-stagger (vertically) than have zero staggering, but having modifiers under the thumbs helps a lot with comfort vs a conventional keyboard. That doesn’t have anything to do with ortholinear, but the two are usually found together because no one who designs ortho boards is daft enough to include a massive spacebar.

              1. 1

Well, obviously this is only anecdotal, but I do feel like my hands are moving a lot less than before. I don’t really have any problems with RSI however, so I guess it could vary per person.

Certainly very comfortable however, definitely more than with a staggered layout.

                1. 1

In my Kinesis Advantage(s) they are. Not sure how much its shape affects them.

                2. 2

Looks amazing! I’m waiting for mine to ship; should be here in a week or so. ?

                  1. 1

Thank you! I guess you got in on the group buy?

                    1. 1

Indeed I did. I still need to figure out what caps to put on it… something to match the metallic green case.

                      1. 1

Haha, know the feels… Perhaps retroist? Would be a very green board though.

                  2. 2

Tangential question: do they make ortholinear keyboards with a normal number of rows? I’d really like to try one, but I’m not interested in giving up an actual spacebar, or number keys, or whatever else. I haven’t found any.

                    1. 2

I too really like a normal-ish number of rows (and columns), so I bought a Diverge (see https://unikeyboard.io/product/diverge/). It has four rows and 14 columns in a split form-factor. I recently decided that I’d like it better as a one-piece keyboard and modified it like so: http://imgur.com/a/bqeDf.

olkb do also sell the Preonic, though there is also the option to cut your own plate and handwire/design your own PCB :P

To be fair, I could have used a 2u spacebar, I just wanted single buttons so I could reprogram one if I wanted.

                      2. 2

I want one of these, pretty much. I just don’t want to deal with the hassle of it all. I hope news of an easier-to-get version of this kind of quality keyboard hits lobste.rs in the future ..

                        1. 1

I’ll build you one for money :P

                          1. 1

How much? How long will it take?

                          1. 5

Only two posts before you hit a racial slur. Why would you link to this?
