This came up in the ffmpeg 7.1 announcement thread: their server was overwhelmed, I pointed out the “archive” option, by the comment count, and someone else had the realization: “oh, that’s what it does”. I think changing the link text to “caches” would be more clear.

I went to file a new issue, but the text there:

Please discuss feature requests in the chat room or a meta thread before posting.

made posting this here, instead, sound preferable.

      Other alternatives:

      • mirrors
      • archives

I think mirrors makes it more obvious what the intent is.

I agree, although I’m not sure that (e.g.) Wayback Machine is strictly a mirror, as it injects its own UI elements over the archives page.

either one of those is IMHO nicer/more established than “caches”

I think “cache” is fairly well established (e.g., the Google Web cache), but it implies that the page is stored only temporarily, which is not the intent of e.g. Wayback Machine.

This seems like an obvious improvement if someone would like to knock out the quick PR for it.

And maybe worth noting there are open issues for improving site design, like porting to css grid.

            I made the PR - 1337, w00t, lol - with “caches”.

Heh, I’ll go look at adding an “s” to make it “archives”. (I’m serious, but also amused.)
