    I do have to wonder how bad of an information leak the index b-tree itself would be in this case. Of course, actually being able to access the index directly is only possible in the worst kind of server compromise, but this is one possible concern when you’re thinking of implementing some offloaded encryption like this.

      The problem is that the database has no way to perform interesting operations on the data

      Granted it’s not particularly efficient -yet- Fully Homomorphic Encryption begs to differ on that point

        This is indeed a very promising research area. But it’s not ready for practical use yet, as far as I know.
