What are you doing this week? Feel free to share!

Keep in mind it’s OK to do nothing at all, too.

I’m currently driving down from Chicago to the eclipse right now, I’m jazzed.

My code time is mostly going to recheck lately, but enough little Lobsters bugs have slipped in that I need to spend some time there. Years ago I live-streamed Lobsters coding on Twitch, I think maybe I’ll try making a weekly habit out of coding and open office hours. Mid-day Tuesdays would also be open for European time zones. I’ll post on the socials and irc.l when I go live.

It was really visible where I am in New Brunswick, including over two minutes of totality. Quite nice!

A friend of mine was saving money to go to US from Slovenia with his 14y son to see this, but eventually the son decided he wouldn’t like to travel to US and back for just few days so they didn’t go … so consider yourself lucky :)

FWIW, there will be one over parts of Spain in 2026, so us Europeans get a chance without traveling so far soon-ish: https://eclipsewise.com/solar/SEdecade/SEatlas2021.html

@pushcx hope you get good viewing conditions!

Wow. It seems the one in Spain will be a total eclipse too yes. This is awesome, he said he’s seen total eclipse once and that it can’t even compare to non-total eclipse, that’s why he really wanted to see another “in his lifetime” as I understood … but it seems Spain is another chance so great and thanks!

              1. 2

Yeah, xkcd has a new standard reference that I’d endorse. It’s a stunningly beautiful phenomena, especially the eerie silvery light in the couple minutes before and after totality. On our drive back we started planning our trip to Spain to see the next one.

            2. 2

That’s a real shame :-(. I’m looking forward to the 2026 eclipse that’ll be visible from Spain; I’ve seen exactly one total eclipse in my life, more than twenty years ago, and it’s one of the most impressive things I’ve ever witnessed. I had half a mind to buy plane tickets to Chicago this year.

Exactly his words, he also saw one total so far and said it can’t be compared to anything and non-total doesn’t eve come close. I’ve seen few non-total eclipses, so I can’t tell, but this about Spain seems promising!

100%, I’ve seen two of those, the difference between them is like the difference between seeing Star Wars Episode 6 for the first time and hearing it retold by someone who hates sci-fi but had nothing better to watch on a flight. I am not easily scared and astronomy was one of my hobbies at the time, so I had a very “objective” outlook of it, and it was still humbling, and it haunts me to this day. If I’d been born 3,000 years ago, I can totally see myself throwing people into volcanoes after one of those.

            3. 1

Welp, I can only get “Your browser is not currently supported.” while trying to log in to twitch with every browser I have. I spent a half-hour tinkering with various things (there’s a conspicuous console error about an “integrity check”) without any luck. Maybe this is a hint that my hot tub stream was too risque.

            4. 3

Well I was going to travel to see the total eclipse, but the forecast is 100% clouds and rain. Alas.

Figuring out what to do at work again, after last week’s Big Demo that we spent two weeks preparing for just barely managed to look successful.

              Searching for jobs.

Working on Garnet, semi-routinely for once. I’m back to monomorphization, which I think I might actually have a decent grip on now.

Playing wayyyyy too much Stardew Valley.

              1. 2

Short week for me work-wise, ended up with a large amount of in-progress stuff recently so trying to bring things in to land safely and reduce what’s up in the air.

Heading to Bruges, Belgium with a friend for a couple of nights. Never been, will be our first time using the Eurostar too. Looking forward to it.

                1. 2

Off to EuroLLVM in Vienna (flying out on Tue, back on Fri). I’m not talking this time, so looking forward to being able to focus on soaking in the presentations and talking to people.

                  1. 2

I’m having my gallbladder removed on Wednesday, so I’m doing some smaller QoL tasks at work that I can have finished by then. The procedure is simple and I’ll most likely be sent home on the same day, but I’m told that I’ll probably be spending the next few days in bed and on morphine, and in a bit of pain.

So I’m not planning much of anything aside from that.

Currently reading: Maria Ressa - “How To Stand Up To A Dictator” (though I’m reading it in Swedish). Though I’ve just picked up an enormous collector’s edition boxed set of the old Danish comic series “Valhalla”, which I might end up reading if my morphine-brain can’t deal with anything more demanding than comics. (From previous experience, I don’t handle the stuff well.)
