Somewhat tangental, but my very simple solution to dotfile madness is https://github.com/orbitz/dotfiles

The thing that was missing from other solutions I found online was two fold.

    • Handling secret data. I have a special section of files that are encrypted via gpg with a password. Then I store everything in a git repo on dropbox.
    • Having slightly different profiles for different machines. In this case you actually apply multiple profiles so mine are arrange in a heirarchy of ‘global’, which is bare minimum, then the next layer is specific to that machine. So, for example, my work machines tend to have a bit of a different config than my home machines. My solution lets you apply as many profiles as you want, but I’ve found the two levels works easy enough.

It seems to work pretty well, but it only does the bare minimum I want it to.
