This happens in grad school semi-regularly. In my case I stayed enrolled in my old school but was paid as a grad student in my new school. It’s all coming out of grants that travel with the lab anyway. Universities generally make it pretty painless as a matter of courtesy.
We were all given the option, and all but one of us chose to move to Cambridge :) It involved dropping out of Edinburgh and then re-applying to Cambridge.
