    Since it’s mentioned that this application was home grown, I’m willing to bet that this software was implemented by a random undergrad student. The fact that they’re using JSP makes this feel even more likely: as far as I’m aware “nobody” uses that except university lecturers.

    (I’m being hyperbolic with that last comment, but not intensely.)

      During my university years we had a computer test (on something non Computer Science related, believe it was Electronics), that had all the correct answers in the associated JS code… The teacher (who was not programmer) was very proud of his creation and modern evaluation methods.
