Update from camp MPEG: Continued suing over AVC, healthy discussions on HEVC pricing, and a wish for a FRANDlier future with VVC.

As usual, Jan Ozer paints the picture that HEVC is a mess, while AVC is a success (licensing wise).

One thing Ozer tends to forget, but managed to touch upon this time: Hell tends to freeze over before you see support for royalty bearing formats in freely distributed software. My explanation is simple: Classic FRAND licensing is simply hostile to free software – they have themselves to thank. As such, AVC was far from ideal, and is not the example to repeat!

In order for VVC to compete in AV1 territory, MPEG needs to at least stop alienating and making enemies of the whole free software community for the sake of fairness, and start following up HEVC Advance’s exception for freely distributed software, this time with all patent holders on board.
