Feel free to tell what you plan on doing this weekend and even ask for help or feedback.

Please keep in mind it’s more than OK to do nothing at all too!

  2. 17

I haven’t slept in three days. I’m hoping to sleep. A lot.

    1. 2

Best of luck getting your sleep! You deserve it :)

      1. 2

Turns out, my brain decided to forget we’re getting new windows installed at home first thing Saturday morning.

I’m reminded of a phrase by a good friend of mine who passed away around 15-ish years ago: “sleep is for the dead.”

        1. 1

Jeez. Do you have insomnia or did you have some kind of emergency… that lasted for 72 hours?

          1. 3

For a period of two to three weeks every six months, I get huge bouts of insomnia. Worst I’ve had is six days without solid sleep. At around the 90 hour mark, I start micro-sleeping throughout the day/night: periods of 2-5 minutes where I space out.

            1. 2

I used to have insomnia issues due to anxiety, although not nearly that bad (1 or 2 days at a time). I finally got it under control when I started going to the gym a few days a week and going to yoga once a week (the less intense ones that emphasize breathing, Hatha or Anusara). Might not work for everyone.

        2. 5

I damaged the recoil spring guide rod in my competition pistol by installing it upside down. Rookie mistake! It now has a crack on one side but still works. Will have to see if I can machine one: only have a lathe and this isn’t quite a rotational only shape. Otherwise could try and silver braze the crack.

We’re also eyeing a 2nd vehicle, BMW i3, so a test drive maybe.

          1. 2

I’m guessing (and hoping) that a failure of the recoil spring guide isn’t going to be dangerous to the shooter?

            1. 1

Nope, and the crack is not on the side that’s subjected to mechanical stress: wouldn’t ever crack there if it was inserted properly.

            2. 1

              What’s your comp pistol?

              1. 1

Browning Hi-Power GP Competition, the one with long barrel and muzzle weight.

                1. 2

                  Browning Hi-Power GP Competition

Nice! Any opinions on the CZ comp models?

                  1. 6

Most 75/85 pattern matchguns are made with IPSC type shooting in mind: quick draw, high speed, large targets at close range. I do Nordic field shooting which is more precision oriented. It’s 6 shots per hold, typically at 25m but can vary from 15 to 180m. For IPSC you want one that can be quickly reloaded, has high mag capacity, accepts red dot sights, and is not unwieldy to draw. For Nordic it’s iron sights only so priority is on the largest sightline and the longest barrel (restricted to 6”).

I never shot CZ but used a Tanfoglio loaner for a while, which is an Italian 75 copy. It’s entirely fine but is a handicap in Nordic events. Right tool for the job etc.

                    1. 1

This was very informative, thank you!

              2. 1

I assume that the upside down here refers to forward to backward? Or did you literally rotate the thing about its axis?

                1. 1

No, literally upside down: the part has asymmetric lug engaging with the barrel and slide stop, and can be inserted both ways. Somehow I messed up after doing it right a few times already.

              3. 5

Riding my bike around Oregon’s Crater Lake, as they have a car-free day!

                1. 2

Damn, I wanted to do this but completely forgot. Have a good and safe ride!

                  1. 2

It was great! The weather was nice and probably the last warm day of the year. Should be good weather for the car-free day next Saturday too, but chillier.

                    1. 2

If I only I wasn’t already signed up for the Harvest Century on Sunday… :P

                2. 4

I’m going to work on myself. I plan to kick back, relax and delve deeper into astral projection. It should be a nice respite from Kubernetes.

                  1. 2

That can be a trip if you can pull it off. PTSD blocked me from on-demand type given I couldn’t get path transition from conscious to unconscious breathing phase. Always choked and woke up to varying degrees of readiness. That said, the progressive relaxation of muscles to force body toward sleep followed by relaxation of mind to breathing to allowing a transition got right there. It worked for everyone else.

Even better concept, albeit maybe not healthy, came from Monroe in using subconscious habits to drive the process. His example was getting thirsty at night going for a drink of water. He’d intentionally not drink it intending to come back later. Do that a few times. He claimed to even drink salt water to increase thirst. Eventually, he goes to drink the water but his hand goes through the faucet. This he says is his unconscious following the pattern he set to project him to the sink, he follows the motion, and he becomes aware of the different result. Memory trouble keeps me from recalling whether he immediately walked to his room seeing himself lying there or was jerked by the head back to his body. Most reactions are one of the two. Once past projections, most warned to stay away from body or looking at it since it prematurely ended exploration for some reason.

Anyway, that’s more extreme than most stuff I read. The muscles->breathing->let-it-go hand-off is safer. I thought the concept might give you ideas, though, in that you build on your natural, unconscious drives to create habits that will kick in when you’re asleep and especially important your body is asleep. If body isn’t asleep, you might sleepwalk, wake up in middle of whatever it is, or who knows what if imagination takes off while lying next to someone. I always practiced it alone just in case.

                  2. 4

Planning to explore the local mountain biking trails nearby.

                    1. 4

Recovering from a 4 day long hackathon at work and making the resolution to never do that again.

                      1. 3

I hope to get my cat back home today from the clinic (she had a serious surgery this week) in which case I will take care of her full time. Otherwise, I will be sitting in front of my window like this.

                        1. 2

Best wishes for the kitty. That has to be stressful.

                          1. 2

Thank you very much. It has been really really stressful.

                        2. 3

                          Learn Apache Spark

                          1. 2

                            That’s a useful skill!

                            1. 2

I will take a look at Zig’s issues marked as contributor friendly and see if there’s anything there fitting to my skill level.

                              1. 2

Continue with an experiment on meta-type-system over Go for automatic CRUD management over a database.

Also will investigate rclone for backups, starting with a Minecraft server.

                                1. 1

Give restic a look as well if you can. It fan use rclone as a backend to upload places.

                                  1. 1

restic is what I’m currently using, but I’m looking for a solution that doesn’t leave the backup repository location, read-write token and repository password inside the machine I’m trying to backup and keep secure.

I should be able to perform the backup from another, non-public machine, in the same network as the server to backup, using rclone or something similar.

                                    1. 1

Yeah fair enough. There’s maybe something to do with vault…

Dunno, I’m just going for push based rather then pull since I’m looking for a backend I don’t manage.

                                2. 2

I plan on doing a few different things:

                                  • Playing DnD tonight with a pretty consistent group.

                                  • Put some hours into both WoW Classic and Dark Souls

                                  • Fix some work related items that came up through the week.

                                  • Squeeze a visit in with relatives.

Overall it should be a pretty productive and relaxing weekend.

                                  1. 1

                                    Dark Souls

Which one? Is it your first DS/From game?

                                    1. 1

Yes the first one. It is my first From game but I have watched quite a bit of BloodBorne.

                                      1. 1

Nice! First DS is a masterpiece. I recommend playing without consulting a guide at first. Ideal setup is you have someone who can give you hints/advice without outright spoiling things.

                                  2. 2

This week I turned all modifiers into annotations in the language I work on:

The core idea is to put as much of the language on equal footing to code users could write, while also allowing the modifiers to benefit from all the facilities annotations usually have, like the ability to have parameters and defaults, as well as allowing migration and deprecation.

                                    Before:

                                    open abstract class A {
                                      abstract fun printSpecial() -> Int;
                                    }

                                    After:

                                    @open @abstract
                                    class A {
                                      @abstract
                                      fun printSpecial() -> Int;
                                    }

On the weekend I’m probably focusing on implementing some of the missing stuff that I consider the bare minimum, like if-expressions.

                                    1. 2

Recovering from the cold that hit me this week.

Either a short cycling trip or going to an exposition of the faculty of arts with our daughter.

Getting a 1TB Intel 660p NVME SSD to replace the old 500 GB SATA SSD in my NUC.

We’ll probably also visit my parents.

                                      1. 1

Do you find the form factor of a NUC to be particularly useful for anything? They seem neat but I’ve always figured I’d rather have a normal server in my closet or pay for a cheap cloud server somewhere.

                                        1. 2

Do you find the form factor of a NUC to be particularly useful for anything?

Actually, we use them for nearly everything at home :). My Linux desktop, my 5y/o daughter’s machine to play gcompris and program her Micro:Bit, and as our NAS (since we do not need redundancy). The latest generation NUCs typically have modern Intel features (e.g. my NUC8i5 is quad core, had an m.2 slot with NVMe support, Thunderbolt 3/USB-C), they are typically well-supported by Linux, they are small and quiet, and they have something for most segments (Celeron, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7). Finally, they are also competitively priced.

To me, the NUC is the Mac Mini for Linux.

                                      2. 2

My plans changed abruptly. My girlfriend was just invited to a 10 day USDA meeting in DC, so I’m going to be cat-sitting and house-sitting starting tomorrow. During that time, I’m going to take the opportunity to work on my CUDA C++ bioinformatics library and maybe finally get around to testing it out on my cluster. Also, I’ll be watching some Big10 football games and testing out WWAN coverage on my travel laptop.

                                        1. 2

Catching up on sleep to fight off whatever my immune system is dealing with.

Possibly going to the Renn Faire.

Nothing work or otherwise tech related because I need a break.

                                          1. 2

For once I’ve got a couple of fun things to share:

                                            • Rearchitecting a calendar application and starting to put serious hours into it
                                            • Buying a van to convert into a camper/house (might happen on Monday instead but I’m still counting it)
                                            1. 1

I have modest plans for this weekend. I want to work some more on my Secure Scuttlebutt Add-on for Firefox called Patchfox. I’m reworking it all and it is much more in tune with what I want now (an extensible system that is easy to pick and tweak).

I’m also going to put some time in learning more Racket with the objective of building litlte GUI apps. I have a ton of apps I want to build for my own personal usage and Racket is looking like a quite nice alternative for them.

                                              1. 1

On wednesday I came back to work from my vacation and I’ve been working my ass off since. I’m exhausted, so I’m planning to sleep in and play Grim Fandango all day and read Infinite Jest. I might go back to the syncplay client in Go I was working on a while ago and implement mpv IPC if I feel like it.

                                                1. 1

It’s fall here already. I’m looking forward to cleaning the house a bit, getting ready for a trip next weekend, learning some more about marketing, and continuing in Dark Souls 3.

                                                  1. 1

I’m at PyCon UK, with a small group of colleagues from Wellcome! Mostly hosting the jobs table, but will probably sneak into a talk or two as well.

                                                    1. 1

I was working in India this week and so the friendly folks from the office organised a small excursion for me to see a bit of culture things before I leave!

                                                      1. 1

Still in Kyoto for vacation, so I might check out some local arcades. I’ve heard there’s a nice bridge over east, too, but Sunday’s supposed to get really hot, so maybe not yet.

                                                        1. 1

Won’t get you out of the heat, but you could head up to Kurama station on the north side of the city, do some hiking in the forest, and have lunch/dinner on one of the platforms suspended over the river. Makes for a pretty fun day trip!

                                                        2. 1

Going to Canada’s Wonderland to express my inner child.

                                                          1. 1

Going to work on finishing my super minimal static site generator, toss in studying a couple chapters of my book for a Linux foundation sysadmin cert and then eat some cake and read manga for my birthday.

                                                            1. 1

I’m working on the marketing / adoption strategy for a utility I built. https://bizybee.app (lets you text local businesses).

                                                              1. 1

Getting caught up on administrative tasks (Friday is batch-admin-task day), then showing some friends around DC that are in town, culminating in group trivia Sunday night.

Hopefully I’ll be able to maintain my sleep schedule and routines from Why We Sleep the entire time.

                                                                1. 1

EVT assembly and testing, finishing up some DevOps tasks, making a Plyo Box using the Shaper Origin, and (fingers crossed) running <20min 5k

                                                                  1. 1

Hiking in Harper’s Ferry with a colleague and some of his family + friends. Should be fun!

                                                                    1. 1

We have our own open days this week-end at CERN. I’ll be volunteering on board games workshop to teach young kids basic programming concepts. If anyone around pass by the datacentre area to say hi.

                                                                      1. 1

No definite plans for Saturday. I’d like to get some reading in and clean up my apartment a bit. I’m just barely recovered from my vasectomy enough to ride my bike short distances, so I’d like to run some errands and get some shopping done.

Then, on Sunday, a friend and I are hanging out in Denver. Our main objective is to visit the Tattered Cover book store, but we’ll have lunch and wander around a bit, too.

                                                                        1. 1

                                                                          Strange Loop Conference!

                                                                          1. 1

The missus has kicked me out of the house so I’m out and about, enjoying the sunshine and spring weather. I’d love to go swimming but alas I’m on-call.

Sunday is the annual vintage tractor pull and wood chopping competition. There’s nothing quite like a Lanz Bulldog at full tilt. I’ll probably spend the rest of the weekend thinking about mechanical keyboards.

                                                                            1. 1

Just reprogrammed my old arduino uno back to stock (I had forgotten I had reprogrammed it as a usb keyboard). The rest of the weekend is going to be spent building the sous vide machine from random parts that just arrived. Will probably do a post once done.

                                                                              1. 1

Visit wifes grandfather. Try to buy some lego (someone was selling in bulk less than half an hour drive from me recently, and my 4 y.o. has spent considerable time playing with lego the last few months). Also: Be at home with the kids (my wife has work weekend) and visit church.

                                                                                1. 1

Going to the oregon coast for a day; maybe work on some more optimazations for my go-camo project; break out the chiminea again for the fall season.

                                                                                  1. 1

Setup a K3S cluster at my home with a bunch of C.H.I.P. devices
