    I remember reading this article when I was first getting into (Debian) Linux in the early 2000s. This bit has always stuck with me:

    Our goals throughout the effort, when articulated at all, have always concerned themselves with building a comfortable relationship with the machine and with exploring ideas and inventions in operating systems. We have not been faced with the need to satisfy someone else’s requirements, and for this freedom we are grateful.

    The last sentence was my email signature for years. (Until I realized that like many email signatures it sounds grand or cool to the person who picks it, but people without greater context have very little idea what it says.)

    Here’s another version of the document made by someone at Berkeley. Two advantages of this version: it’s shorter (if you want to print it), and the PDF itself is searchable.
