Facebook don’t spy on you through your microphone

Maybe Facebook isn’t, but it’s definitely happening https://www.404media.co/cmg-cox-media-actually-listening-to-phones-smartspeakers-for-ads-marketing

        it’s definitely happening

I don’t know I’d go that far when it’s just a claim on a marketing company’s web page with no demonstrated customers or actual proof that they can do this.

I agree, the technical arguments why you can’t do this are fairly strong. Google probably could on Android devices, because they install things with sufficient privileges that they can bypass most of these restrictions (Google Play Services runs with more privileges than anything that you can install yourself on a typical Android device). The same applies to Apple. Perhaps the biggest argument is that, if this were possible, Google would not allow competitors in the ad space to do it.

I didn’t really agree with this point in the article:

Facebook say they aren’t doing this. The risk to their reputation if they are caught in a lie is astronomical.

Facebook is routinely caught lying and people decide to boycott Facebook all of the time. They move to Instagram instead.

        One minor nit:

        > Does that mean I’m marked as “consenting” to having my data used to train AI models?

The copy to the left of the toggle explicitly says:

        > Your data is never used to train their internal models.

Ah I see he mentions that later, whoops!
