Happily this means zed itself will largely become open source in the near future, according to the FAQ:
Will Zed be open source?
We are currently working towards opening Zed’s source code to the public. The first step of this process is rewriting Zed to use a newer iteration of our graphics library, gpui. This is a large undertaking, but we are mostly through the process. Currently, the Zed rewrite is feature-complete enough for us to use it for its own development. Once the rewrite is finished, and after some general house cleaning of the Zed repository, we will be ready to make the repository public.
Think I’ve commented this somewhere previously, but Zed was the first editor that’s entered my brain successfully enough I reach for it before TextMate now. Been a happy TextMate user since … 2007?

Yes!
We’re still polishing off some things in the new Preview release, but once that is in a good place we’re turning our sights to open source :)
