We (Twilio) have come to very similar conclusions. We don’t use EBS or Amazon services that use EBS.
We ($dayjob) used to use EBS, but had lots of issues with it. Tried provisioned IOPS, and it helped, but still had regular issues. ELB introduced lots of latency too.
So we eventually migrated off to dedicated servers (think: a softlayer-esque MSP), and it has been amazing. After using aws for a while, I forgot how good real hardware, with raid 15k SAS (or raid ssd even) can be.
Still use S3 though. That works pretty darn well.
