I recognized myself in this post. That’s exactly how I use htop. I remember when I used the tree view for the first time by seeing it in the window. Very good software!
More than agreeing or disagreeing with the design philosophy of htop, or any other piece of software for that matter, the thought exercise put in planning this UI is where is at. Notice that the author had a clear idea on how to make this program useful and made his decisions based on that. Great post. We need more people with clear ideas of what they want to do and what they are doing in the software industry.
Thanks for this. I find myself constantly trying to convince people that it is better to teach your users to understand how things work, than to insulate them from how things work and spoon feed them. It is an uphill battle. Now I have a great article to link them.
