    Feh! Where’s the tape punch? This is just for mindless content consumption. People will be pulling tapes of MP3s and videos, instead of punching their own tapes of games they wrote in BASIC the way we used to. I predict total civilization collapse in 3, 2, 1…

      That got me to wondering …

      According to Wikipedia [1], paper tape has a bit density of ~ 50 bits / inch. Leaving aside error correction / whatevs, and assuming 5MiB for an MP3, you’d be looking at … 21.307km o_O

      For all I wax lyrical about my first hard drive (a second hand 20MiB MFM HDD I fitted to my IBM 5150 with 3.5” -> 5.25” rails I made in my high school workshop), that’s next-level.

        I could see someone making an enormously long paper-tape of a prosaic file, as an art project. 21km is probably impractical, but take something smaller like a JPEG of some stale meme, then string the tape around and around a gallery…
