Meta: should this link directly to the PDF and have the PDF tag? I can color that tag differently to make it stand out so it’s obvious what you’re clicking on. Hacker News did this with “[pdf]” appended to the title if the URL matched /.pdf$/ but they also included a Scribd link.
I thought about linking to the PDF but I figured the abstract would be a good stopping point first. If it’s preferred, in the future I can link directly to the PDF. If so – the PDF tag should be sufficient, I’d think.
Due to the lack of an abstract page I’ve just created a story being a direct link to a pdf and tagged it “pdf”. But I’ve added the abstract as text available if you click “discuss”. Perhaps some kind of visual indication of the presense of an additional describtion would be nice?

I think a PDF tag would be great if linking directly to a PDF but I do like how kyle linked to a overview page first.

Maybe an <abstract> tag or a line under the title with the first line of the “discuss text”. Something like
