A bit rant-y, he definitely had coffee that morning.

      The high points:

      • web stacks with “no-build” are more viable than ever; e.g. using interpreted languages, css over sass or scss, js and import maps over compiled versions or webpack
      • re-evaluate rent vs own, as cloud is expensive and more things are being leased to you (including books)
      • high quality of life programming languages are worth the electricity(1) and notes that LSP uptick is increasingly helpful to editors
      • “the future” is a push for systems a single person can understand(2)

Aside: 1 - not in the interview, but in web contexts it is often io causing performance, and not the language handling the request 2 - i think it is unfortunate that he picks on k8s in this context to make the point, as it tends to split the crowd instead of foster conversation about this style of team

I tend to agree with DHH pretty often, but his manner of delivery and communication style is fairly off-putting to me. I’ve read a lot of his writings, and this is the first time hearing him speak. This communication style is one that I cannot get away from fast enough in a social setting. I hope for the sake of those who work with him that in a non-interview setting he preaches less and participates in the conversation a bit more.

But my takeaway from this interview is that as an industry, DHH believes we should do more to simplify technology and our tooling, and with that I wholeheartedly agree.

Slightly out of topic: Should we add the “audio” tag? Yeah, this has a transcript but I think we would benefit from making it more evident that there is an audio version of this.

Oh look, DHH has another opinion.

Hey, I sympathize. I sometimes succumb to fits of snark too. But, this comment really doesn’t meet the Lobsters quality bar. Make an actual criticism if you want.

I believe that the implied criticism is that all of the content is opinion presented as fact. It is good to remember that most of this is one person’s opinion. One who has only worked on a certain specific type of application for the last 20 yrs. To present opinions as facts and as prescriptive for all types of applications and to also suggest that any other way of doing things is wrong or doesn’t work or is even less optimal is irresponsible at best and possibly harmful to our industry.
