Update. The talk was pretty good. I have seen videos of his speeches but in person it is a different experience and definitely worth it!
It is clear he has given so many talks that he is a bit of a honey badger. It wasn’t boring like many talks I went to. It is also clear he has a sense of humor about mostly everything.
For example, giving the talk without shoes on. Making tea during the talk with a hot water machine behind him. The no shoes made sense in the end when he did St. IGNucius. It was actually very funny and a pay off in the end.
He stayed later engaging with everyone. Some people even asked pretty hostile questions, but he kept his cool way better than they did.
One thing that may confuse people is that he is hard of hearing. I don’t know about you, but when I talk with headphones on, I talk loudly. So he had to keep reminding people to speak up, and generally he had a louder tone of voice. But this makes sense if you are hard of hearing. But people might confuse his louder tone for rudeness. But those people never had a grandpa I guess.
What was the topic? He’s got like three or four topics that he always does.
I’ve seen him… twice? Three times now? I’ve had dinner with him too. Did you get a chance to dine with him? He’s super-approachable. If you want to spend time hanging out with him, he usually agrees. He also loves to eat, and he knows local cuisine from around the world very well.
Seeing RMS in Chicago today. Great timing for a great read.

I unfortunately did not dine with him. The topic was the standard ‘why free software and how you can help’
