Feel free to tell what you plan on doing this weekend and even ask for help or feedback.

Please keep in mind it’s more than OK to do nothing at all too!

Last weekend of me travelling to Toronto to visit the girlfriend because we move in together in two weeks (we need time and space after this weekend to clean and pack). We’re going to eat Filipino food with our hands and watch the director’s cut of 2001: A Space Odyssey. I have a comedy show on Sunday at this little dive in Toronto that should be pretty fun. Monday is my favourite Canadian holiday: Civic. I’ll be wrapping up production on episode three of my Comedy-Baseball podcast Kevy’s Country Breakfast on Monday night as well.

      director’s cut

? I thought Kubrick burned all the negatives of extra footage?

      1. 2

Yeah I just went looking for it after I posted this. I guess the only cut is the director’s cut. Either way, the girlfriend has not seen it so I’m excited to watch it with her.

        1. 2

Nice. My wife couldn’t sit through it. I recently saw it in full Cinerama glory – intermission and all. It was pretty wonderful. It helped that I was well into the vapor zone by the time the star gate sequence happened.

          1. 2

We watched it. She said she never wants to watch another movie ever again.

            1. 2

What? She didn’t enjoy the monotony of life in outer space? What about the scene where Dr. Floyd reads the instructions for the space toilet? Nothing at all? ;)

              1. 2

you know when you see something so good, you never care to see it again?

                yeah

      2. 1

Have fun in Toronto! Are you moving here with the girlfriend, or is the girlfriend joining you elsewhere?

        1. 2

Nope, she’s making the move down to Hamilton. It’s a pretty big change (but not really).

          1. 2

Well, that’s a big change, but not so much geographically.

            1. 2

Yeah the pace of life will be different but she seems pretty excited to be down here. We’re not too worried.

      3. 7

I will go to an extra “surprise training” this weekend, which my Krav Maga teacher announced just now. It could be boxing, fitness, Krav Maga or anything else. Exciting to see what he comes up with :)

Tomorrow evening, I’ll have dinner with my mother and sister.

Other than that, no real plans yet. Maybe I’ll mess around trying to improve performance of our SRFI-13 implementation. The API is quite resistant to performance improvements though: lots of optional and “type overloaded” arguments, which make it convenient to use but horribly slow.

Earlier in the week, Prgmr.com’s primary transit provider, Hurricane Electric, send notice that they’re doing a router upgrade early this coming week. They expect downtime in the range of one hour. We have a secondary transit provider we can switch over to, precisely for situations like this.

We haven’t actually performed this operation since moving to a new data center earlier this year, however, so we’ll be spending the weekend doing first a trial run and then the early part of the coming week doing it again for real.

This allows us to test our procedure and update our runbook for our new location, while being able to back out in the event something goes wrong. That way we can follow a tested checklist, now updated for our current data center, when there isn’t a possibility of backing out.

The exact dates and times are in our network maintenance announcement, though I don’t expect any loss of connectivity to lobste.rs. You’re certainly welcome to hang out with us in IRC while it happens.

          1. 3

I often mention yall are no bullshit and more transparent than other providers. I’m bookmarking this to share as a quick example. With your permission of course.

            1. 3

You’re welcome to share it, it’s a public comment–but you also have my permission. And thank you for the compliment!

          2. 6

Starting work on a book. I’ve decided I’m going to write about the history of debugging and how it ties into development practices. I expect this will take me a while, but I’ve had so much fun working on the essays that I want to explore this further. I took the next week off to try and come up with a decent proposal.

            1. 5

I placed some Bluetooth beacons around my apartment building, so I plan to build something that does something with whatever data the beacons manage to see / collect.

              1. 4

Using estimote beacons – they should only really pickup info from my devices since they are registered. Yeah, I guess sorta the point is to show that one can place random tech on water pipes in common areas and no one really will give it a second look. Yes, I also wonder if I can use them to sniff for other devices that might come and go. It’s all for fun and to scare myself a bit.

                1. 3

Last I heard about BT beacons was some startup that gave them away at a ton of hackathons, but since then I haven’t seen anything about them. Is there still better hardware for this stuff now and are there any use cases you’re considering? I could never get them to work well, nor think of anything interesting or productive to do with them.

                  1. 2

I think Estimote is all about asset tracking. I’m hoping to learn more about them this weekend. :D

                    1. 2

How did working with them go? I’m starting to scope out ideas for my next project.

                      1. 1

Got sidetracked and wasn’t able to do anything beyond setting them up in Estimote’s cloud service, and sticking them behind utility pipes.

                    2. 1

I think as companies adopt the SIG mesh spec beacons (and general low-power sensors) are going to come back around. Proximity is a big limitation.

                    3. 2

I’m planning to do a similar project. What equipment are you using?

                      1. 2

I’m wondering if that sort of thing needs permission. Or are you going the “asking for forgiveness is easier” route?

                        1. 1

Probably ask forgiveness if anyone ever finds them

                      2. 4

It’s the greatest holiday in Ontario (Civic Holiday!), but I’m going to be in New York for an interview on Monday. I think it’s going to be nice out, so we’ll spend as much time out of doors as possible. Nails is dropping her nap, which means she gets cranky and unpleasant midday, but the upside is that she’s not waking me up at 4:45 every morning any longer.

I’m also going to go setup my guitars and possibly try to record some ideas that I have running around in my head, which will mean I get to horse around on a bass, which is always fun.

                        1. 4

Watching the pride parade in Amsterdam tomorrow with the family and some friends. They do a whole afternoon cruise along the Amstel and the canals. It’s a ton of fun.

                          1. 3

I’ll be seeing a friend and eating with him at a Japanese restaurant. Quite excited to see him after a year! Then on Sunday I plan on fixing some part of this side project I have been working on to help with the testing process at work.

                            1. 3

I was going to be assembling PCB prototypes, but I guess I’ll be doing something else since DHL doesn’t deliver on weekends and they just missed their own internal transfer…

                              1. 3

I’ve gotten into building guitar pedals recently, and my kitchen table has been covered in the parts for a boost pedal for the past few weeks. I figure I’ll finally get around to that one this weekend, and also make it further through the book I’m currently reading on the MEAN stack.

                                1. 3

Working on a new software tool I’ve created, it is somewhat a cross between home brew and docker (or nix). I think it has some good potential ahead.

I’m not too far from the point of needing people to try it out and give feedback. Let me know if you are interested, especially if you have some experience with nix/guix.

                                  1. 3

Planning to play some Borderlands 2 and Stardew Valley, as well as muck about with some powerdns automation. Really liking it’s rest API for automatically creating zones and resource records automatically.

                                    1. 2

Borderlands 2 for the run-and-gun gameplay and Stardew Valley for relaxation. I like your style.

                                    2. 2

I’ll be visiting Berlin until Tuesday (any general recommendations on what to see, besides the “standard stuff” would be nice) to meet up with relatives, and in what time is left I’ll have to be probability/statistics for an exam next Thursday.

My university didn’t think it was necessary to inform us of when the exams will take place, until after we made our plans for this summer, and I’m kind of dealing with it now ^^

                                      1. 2

If you’re into archaeology and history, you should visit the Neues Museum. In general, the Museum Island (Museumsinsel) is interesting, and has very fair prices for university students. Have a nice trip!

                                        1. 2

Sounds interesting, will see if I’ll make it.

                                        2. 2

Idk if the Turkish Market counts as the “standard stuff” but it’s worth checking out.

                                          1. 1

No, didn’t know about this. I was thinking about Brandenburger Tor, Bundestag, … when I said “standard stuff”. No the best term, I know.

                                          2. 2
                                            1. 1

Go visit a hacker space. C-base, raumfahrtagentur,… (there’s more. Ask the Internets)

                                              1. 2

I regret not allocating time to see C-base. Is that considered a hacker space?

                                                1. 1

It’s actually a space ship, but many people consider it a hacker space ;)

                                                  1. 1

Ah, yes. I read it was a spaceship, too. I regret missing it even more now.

                                              2. 1

I literally just got back from Berlin. Here are some of my recommendations:

                                                • Eat as much doner and currywurst as you can. I recommend Mustafa’s track stand for doner and Curry36, which is located near Mustafa’s.

                                                • Cold war bike tour with Fat Iron Tours. The tour is about four hours and the bike ride isn’t strenuous. Our tour guide was really knowledgeable, and we learned a lot about life in Berlin during the Cold War. This is much better than the Checkpoint Charlie museum, which is disorganized mess with walls-of-texts as exhibits. It’s still cool to visit the stop.

                                                • Hitler’s bunker and Jewish Memorial

                                                • The Turkish Market is cool but only happens on certain days.

                                                • Neues Museum to see the bust of Nefertiti. In the words of a famous critic: “Description is useless. See it.”

                                                • Pergamon Museum to see the Ishtar Gate

                                              3. 2

                                                Pnut.io hackathon!

                                                1. 2

I finally get time to work on my DnD project! I have re-organized the roadmap, redone the stack, and this weekend I’ll be updating it with a live site and FAQ (maybe even Authentication functionality).

The designer I commissioned also recently finalized the logo and I’m very excited about it.

                                                  1. 2

The Red Bull flugtag is happening here in Gdynia on Sunday. I’m torn between going to watch that, and staying in and watching the Hungary F1 race.

In any case, no programming. We have an important investor demo on Monday so we’re not deploying before then anyway.

                                                    1. 2

Just got back traveling for a demo at $WORK that ended up being twice as long as planned, so I’m going to take it easy. Do chores, pet the cats, and hang out with friends. Might end up working more on making a tiny functional programming language that compiles to SPIR-V for GPU shaders… but I also might not.

                                                      1. 2

Hopefully no programming! Just carving spoons an spending quality time with friends.

                                                        1. 2

Shouldn’t this be tagged ‘meta’ or something other than ‘programming’ since many comments in these threads are more in line with ‘visiting grandma’ than any actual programming tasks?

                                                          1. 0

                                                            You can suggest tags.

                                                            1. 1

Right, and I do, but they every week it’s very consistently mistagged. So the current system has a bug, or so I think (and question with my previous comment)…

                                                              1. 1

Maybe it’s an “echo” of the semi-regular “what are you working on this week” thread.

And there’s a decent amount of people planning on coding too in the comments.

In the end, these sort of meta-threads should just be tagged “ask”, nothing else.

                                                                1. 2

In the end, these sort of meta-threads should just be tagged “ask”, nothing else.

Validations on the submission form don’t allow you to just tag “ask”, otherwise we would. 🧐

Go back far enough and we used to submit them without “programming”. I think for a while we tagged with “ask” and “culture”, but a discussion lead to them moving to “programming”

                                                          2. 2

Watching the two Bladerunner movies for the fist time, now that we’ve seen 2019 LA two weeks ago.

                                                            1. 2

Rewriting a React/Typescript app to Re-frame/Clojurescript and having a blast. It’s the map/quest editor for work, although this change is more of a personal weekend challenge, if the challenge goes well maybe I’ll actually switch to this stack as I am finding it a lot faster and it matches the way I think.

Also have a birthday party tonight.

                                                              1. 2

I’m planning on going to the Gathering of Corsairs today at the Willow Run Airport near Detroit. It is reportedly the largest number of Corsairs in one place since Word War II, and it is practically right in my backyard. There will also be several B-25 Mitchell bombers there and hopefully some B-24 Liberators (built at Willow Run during the war).

Two things I will not be doing this weekend:

                                                                • Obsessively checking our site usage dashboard for fake accounts. I finally deployed some changes to our registration system to keep the Moldavian registration bots out of our site.
                                                                • Manually verifying the nightly backups. I finally determined that our sporadically failing backups were due to an Apache HTTPD bug in the 2.4.39 reqtimeout module.
                                                                1. 2

I finally deployed some changes to our registration system to keep the Moldavian registration bots out of our site.

                                                                  What a great sentence.

                                                                2. 2

I’m relaxing after a 10-day trip to Germany, with stops in Hamburg and Berlin. What a friendly and beautiful country. The language was a challenge, but we survived. I am glad many people understand English.

The highlight of the trip, at least for me, was visiting the model railroad museum in Hamburg. I was absolutely captivated by the amount of detail and love the modelers put into their designs. We easily spent four hours at the museum. If you’re in Hamburg, the museum is worth every Euro. Another highlight, also in Hamburg, was visiting U-434, a Soviet-era submarine that is stationed on the river.

Thankfully, we got back yesterday and still have the weekend to catch up on sleep and prepare for Monday. I’m planning to get a much-needed haircut, take a break from programming (which I did a lot of during the trip), grocery shop, and, hopefully, see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino’s new movie. I’m also setting aside time to finally dive into Victoria 2.

                                                                  1. 2

Learning Godot game engine to try some lo-fi 3D ideas. I set viewport to 320x240, which is then stretched to larger window, and put postprocessing shader which posterizes R, G and B to 6 levels inspired by this game called underrun. This gives ≈256 colors simulating look of old-school shooters.

I’m trying to figure out suitability of 3D for “game jam grade” single-person projects. 3D is considered hard medium mostly because of model and texture work, and lo-fi in 3D is underexplored. What I fear most is character models, especially animation, but there are ways to retreat from complexity: blocky humans like in Minecraft or Jazzpunk, “billboard” sprites instead of models, etc.

Currently trying to model static outdoor objects and to draw some low-res textures. Blender 2.80 came out recently and so many exciting changes in it, I’m re-learning changed UI.

                                                                    1. 2

My personal project had been on hold for months (motivation, etc.) but got a partner now, so gonna spend Saturday and some of Sunday hopefully trying to nail down my Bounded Contexts in DDD style for the backend API.

                                                                      1. 1

Doing all the gardening I failed to do last weekend due to weather. Managed to get out on the bike once this week, got some maintenance to do on it this weekend (mostly changing batteries in sensors as most of them are dead 😂.)
