I find it hard to read Mickens’s articles and watch his lectures. The first three times or so I found myself agreeing with almost everything he said and laughing at amusing anecdotes, but ultimately I couldn’t distil the arguments he made from all the bull^H^H^H^Hincidental complexity they’re sunk in, leaving me feeling hollow and almost cheated like after eating vegan pasta with decaf espresso. To quote Dabblers and Blowhards, “these statements […] are sprinkled through various essays like raisins in a fruitcake, with no further justification, and the reader is expected to enjoy the chewy burst of flavor and move on to the next tidbit”. Which is a pity: he doesn’t seem dumb, and his incoherent rants may be informed.
