Really surprised this hasn’t generated any more discussion. This is one of the most important issues of our day - maybe the most crucial issue of all. If we don’t take back technology and preserve the Freedom to Tinker, the Hands-on Imperative and, - IMO - the End to End Principle, our future looks very bleak. Technology has the ability to be the most democratizing, liberating and equalizing force of all, but it can also be extremely destructive if misused. And I’m afraid we’re on the wrong path right now.
I don’t know exactly what it’s going to take, but we have to get people interested in this topic. It would be easiest if we (those of us who live in nominally democratic countries) can convince our nation-states to enact laws that protect these rights for individuals. If we fail at that, it’s imperative (no pun intended) that we continue to “treat censorship as damage and route around it” and find technological solutions. Or both.
