From the story submission guidelines:
Do not editorialize story titles, but when the original story’s title has no context or is unclear, please change it.
If I am not mistaken, Editorialize is to inject or express an opinion (usually into the reporting of facts). Is that right? I ask because I have mistakenly thought it meant ‘edit’, myself; and I think I have seen others make the same mistake.
Prompted by this comment and its reply.
If the intended guideline is indeed against injecting opinion, I think a small change would be good, simply because all but the most fluent English speakers can easily get the wrong meaning from ‘editorialize’. A proposal to start from, the original guideline with additions and
subtractions, but no original emphasis because that would get confusing:
editorializeinject your opinion into story titles, but when the original story’s title has no context or is unclear or misleading, please change it. Please remove extraneous components from titles such as the name of the site or section.
