    This is relevant for any lobsters doing ham radio–which might include people working on hobbyist long-distance RF networking links–because licenses and upgrades are about to cost 35USD/pop. Previously it was basically just the cost of administering the test, which was about half that (or less!) and covered however many you wanted to sit for (e.g., pay once and try out for tech, general, or extra).

    You’ve got about a month before this takes effect, licenses are good for 10 years, and it’s a nice skill to have if you want an introduction to some basic electrical and computer engineering as well as some truly arcane stuff around radio communication.
