      Seems like there is an adverse effect on sales when there is a product which has been priced appropriately for the market. When measures are taken to ensure that stolen copies have some problem (poor quality, threat of legal action, inconvenient format) the supply/demand curve adjusts such that such stolen copies don’t affect sales that much. This suggests to me that such soft/indirect enforcement of copyright is effective except for when the product is exceptionally desirable
