It’s like a club held over MS’s heads. They just need to keep spending the resources to keep their in-house Linux expertise in a healthy state.

People make fun of SteamOS and Valve’s Linux work because it didn’t gain much popularity. I personally appreciate it but Valve did it for multiple strategical reasons and a few have paid off pretty well.
