Interesting. I generally use portshaker to “overlay” a private git repo onto the ports tree, and then build via poudriere.
Never thought to create a new port category for my patched ports though…. Nice! I’ll have to incorporate that into my workflow.

Not even required, portshaker functionality is built into the ports tree now.
