It’s a bit hard to qualify what’s just “fancy” and what’s useful.
For example you can use tar for everything, but that doesn’t provide checksums or verification of contents. Zfs provides good features, but given other good tools is that too fancy? Etc…
That’s the problem with this type of discourse. Everyone’s needs are different, and what the author describes as “fancy” may be an absolute requirement for somebody else.
Yeah, I would actually describe “run your own network server, sshfs-mount it, and manually (!) run backups” as ‘fancy’. My own setup just borg backups my entire home directory to a local machine and to rsync.net at 4 am every day via systemd timers, and I have a status tray thing that turns red if either backup timer hasn’t succeeded in the past week.
