Feel free to tell what you plan on doing this weekend and even ask for help or feedback.

Please keep in mind it’s more than OK to do nothing at all too!

Getting accustomed to the fact, that I will be father.

    1. 4

      Congratulations!

      1. 3

Congratulations! I think it will take you more than just this weekend, so plan accordingly. I’m still getting accustomed to it 3 years down the line.

Is this your first? Having a child is the best thing that has happened to me by the farthest margin. It will get challenging, ask for help! If you don’t have family around, don’t worry, friends often step in (they did for us). My wife found a doula to help out just after the baby was born. I hope you get good parental leave. You will need it. If you don’t get it, don’t worry, it will work out. I hope you will read to the baby and take baby on hikes. I think these are good for baby, even if they don’t perceive all the details yet. When baby gets older, I think speaking to it like an adult - telling it about physics and math - does not harm. I have found complex facts and reasonings repeated back to me months after I mentioned them once.

Also, a lot of people will give you advice. Feel free to ignore them. They just mean well.

            Is this your first?

            Yes

It will get challenging, ask for help!

I know, I have 2 you’re brothers out of whom 1 I remember a little how to take care ;)

I hope you get good parental leave.

I am B2B consultant, but fortunately I work from home. We will see how this will work out.

Building this Arduino-powered robotic rover with my kid.

          1. 1

This did not happen. He was short on patience and curiosity and quick to give up. He was ill earlier in the week.. Also apparently the recommended minimum age for this kit is nearly twice his age. Whoops.. I mean, I’ve worked with him on other projects and I’m confident that he can carry out the physical assembly of this thing and operate it with the default firmware. I underestimated his ability to interpret the schematics, which are in the style of LEGO instructions, but perhaps of lower quality (not saying much bad; it’s hard to beat LEGO). But really, the problem was that he quit immediately instead of saying “WTF am I even looking at?” :( We’ll try again.

          2. 5

We’re going to NASA for my father’s birthday and then a friend is having a BBQ because he loves to BBQ.

            1. 2

Born in Memphis, went to Huntsville, and… those two sound like a great combo!

Coolest things about Huntsville were Space Shot (launches people upwards) and I got to walk in an ISS module before they deployed it. Not the American one, though. It was off-limits.

            2. 5

              Playing with Elm.

              1. 1

What are you gonna do with Elm?

                1. 3

Been thinking of that a moment after posting to see what I could make for myself. Mainly things to try out clientside Web ideas such as a die roller and table selector (I’ll definitely make use of that), an RPN calculator for farts and giggles, and/or a feed aggregator. All will likely rely on LocalStorage and otherwise not require a server or backend to do anything.

              2. 5

I’m trying to bootstrap a self-hosted compiler and it is much harder than expected. The source language is rather similar to Elixir, the target is a kind of SSA expressed in C, and I’m trying to run this with a half-backed piece of Python code that shallowly translates the compiler into Erlang. The thing is, most of the compiler is working thanks to a former interpreter that I gave up for a few different reasons (mostly because I need tail call optimization now, and I couldn’t figure out how to implement this in a dumb AST evaluator). It’s a terrible mess but I’m learning a lot.

                1. 5

I’m continuing to write a research paper on using hundreds of TPUs to accelerate ML training. https://www.docdroid.net/faDq8Bu/swarm-training-v01a.pdf

Also attempting to understand how Jax talks to TPUs at a low level.

                  1. 5

Getting my tooling set up to do ARM SoC bootloader development. I’m working on implementing signed boot for devices based on the Allwinner/Sunxi A64, such as the Pine A64. Because it’s ridiculous that there’s no good way on ARM for users with strong security needs to have signed firmware based on a key in their own control.

                    1. 5
                      • Continuing to build a midTbot pen plotter. I’ve had the parts 3d-printed for a while, but the soldering is taking longer than I expected… I think one more afternoon should be enough to get all the electronics done.
                      • Publishing a myfitnesspal-to-sqlite exporter á la the dogsheep project
                      • Cleaning/grocery shopping after being away from my apartment for the holidays
                      1. 5

I’m revampaing my personal website to have some more “original” design to it

                        1. 5

As usual the shift at McDonald’s, but I’m also going to write lightshows for an event at my church. I’m one of the lighting techs at a very large (~5000 people) church. The only issue is that I’ve been faking it and have no idea how to write lightshows, so we’ll see how this goes.

                          1. 4

Continue going through the rabbit hole I got myself into; building a tool for automated epub management with elixir.

                            1. 4

Taking care of my 2 weeks old daughter, continue in the Rust book, prepare our ICE car for sale. And hopefully a nap.

                              1. 3

I have been sick for most of this week.
I will be staying inside today and tomorrow to avoid spreading any germs.

                                1. 3

I have started studying Kobudo in the last few months once a month in a monthly 5 hour class setting. I’m debating picking 1 of my own off weekends to devote another 5 hours of training to Kobudo or other martial arts I study.

                                  Otherwise, sleep sounds good :)

                                  1. 3

Sitting at home with a head cold, hoping it doesn’t turn into a chest cold :-(

I want to use the time to catch up on some reading, refactor the OpenGL library I was working on a while back, practice the piano a bit, and look for dance (waltz/swing) lessons.

                                    1. 2

If you live in a dry area consider using a humidifier.

                                    2. 3
                                      • Working on some nitty gritty bits of the race management system a friend and I are putting together for my sailing club
                                      • Changing the fuel filter on the BMW if the weather holds
                                      • Swimming, given I’ve rejoined the pool and then not visited yet (went out on the push bike today instead. Waaay too chuffing cold for that.)
                                      1. 3

Meeting with my high school robotics club for the 2020 First Robotics Competition Kickoff. We’ll learn what this year’s game is and what the rules are, and come up with the strategy we want our robot to play.

This is what the 2019 game reveal looked like.

                                        1. 3

Tutoring high school kids the basics of python and web programming at NCSS

                                          1. 3

Might get started on a basement lighting project

                                            1. 3

Finishing the ppc64le dynrec core for DOSBox.
