I was previously using a Tasker task for this, but I’ve since switched to using Smart WiFi Toggler to automatically shut off WiFi when I’m out of range of my home wireless connection. Tasker would periodically ping GPS to see if I’m back home, but the Smart WiFi Toggler app is able to toggle based on the cell tower ID. I came across it while reading an article about the new Blackphone since it ships with this (or a similar) app by default.
I always thought one using rfid tags could be good, put a “home” tag in every room and a “leaving” tag on car/bike/front garden/stairs. And the wifi is switched on/off when it finds a tag. No idea what the range/battery is like.
You can do almost this (without it being completely ambient) if you’re willing to explicitly tap your phone against an NFC tag to do the config transition.
