      While mainframes from IBM and others undoubtedly got a lot of their performance from having terminals and other peripherals assemble input and submit it in bulk, the fact of the matter is that these were- at least in the early days- relatively simple devices (some predating microcontrollers) which implemented the bare minimum of input validation.

      My understanding is that that came back to bite them, with much later problems highlighted by “Soldier of Fortran” and others.
